Rea Vaya buses have been suspended until further notice due to the shooting of two drivers in separate incidents in Mapetla and Protea Glen in Soweto last night.
According to a story published by Soweto Urban, the police are investigating the murders.
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the first shooting happened when a driver stopped at a traffic light on Wildchestnut Street in Protea. He was shot dead by unknown gunmen.
In the second shooting incident, on Tshithuthune Street in Mapetla, an eyewitness reported that he heard gunshots and hid.
After the shooting stopped, the witness learned that the driver had been shot dead.
Two Rea Vaya bus drivers died tragically in separate shooting incidents in Soweto.
The witness tried to drive the bus but it hit a wall. Fortunately, the passenger was not injured.
The motive for the shooting is unknown. The police are following all the leads.
The violence has caused Rea Vaya to suspend operations for security reasons. Authorities have advised passengers to use other public transport until the situation is resolved.
The suspension of buses is expected to disrupt commuters who rely on Rea Vaya to go to work and school.
