Tragedy has struck the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) as nine soldiers lost their lives in a fierce battle against M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The soldiers were part of a contingent of 2,900 troops deployed to the region to counter the Rwanda-backed insurgency.
The incident occurred as the M23 rebels attempted to advance on the city of Goma. The SANDF soldiers bravely held off the attack, but unfortunately, nine lives were lost in the process.
The South African government and the SANDF have extended their deepest condolences to the families and friends of the fallen soldiers. The nation mourns the loss of these brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country and the people of the DRC.
May the souls of the departed rest in peace. Their bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
The SANDF's deployment to the DRC is part of a broader regional effort to stabilize the conflict-ridden region and protect civilians from the violence perpetrated by the M23 rebels. Despite the challenges and dangers, the SANDF remains committed to fulfilling its mandate and supporting peace and security in the region.
