Rwandan President Paul Kagame has accused South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and his government of being dishonest and misrepresenting their discussions. In a statement directed at South Africans on Wednesday, Kagame expressed his concerns.
Following the release of tweets and statements from the South African government, Kagame took to social media to challenge Ramaphosa, raising questions about the state of relations between their two nations.
The tension escalated after the tragic deaths of 13 South African peacekeeping troops amid rising conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) involving its military and the M23 rebel group, which is alleged to receive support from Rwanda.
During a media briefing, Defence Minister Angie Motshekga revealed that Ramaphosa had issued a stern warning to Rwanda, stating that any attacks on South African troops would be interpreted as a declaration of war. This message was also relayed by military generals stationed in Goma, DRC, following the soldiers' deaths.
In his posts on X, Kagame mentioned that he had two discussions with Ramaphosa earlier this week regarding the situation in eastern DRC, including one on Wednesday.
He stated, “The information shared by South African officials and President Ramaphosa about our conversations is filled with inaccuracies, intentional attacks, and outright falsehoods. If the essence of our discussions can be so misrepresented in public statements, it raises serious concerns about how these critical matters are being handled.”
