Minister of Defence Angie Motshekga will address the nation on Wednesday about the deaths of 13 South African soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“The ANC offers its condolences to the families of the soldiers who sadly lost their lives while serving for peace and security in Africa,” stated ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula during a media briefing in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
This announcement came after the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) reported the deaths of four additional soldiers on Monday at Goma airport, where the South African soldiers are stationed.
Mbalula called on the United Nations Security Council to take action, describing the attacks on peacekeepers as a breach of sovereignty and international laws.
He also mentioned that regional leaders are in talks to achieve a ceasefire, with the Troika scheduled to meet before the weekend.
The ANC extends its condolences to the families of the soldiers who tragically lost their lives in service to peace and security on the continent.

“We are waiting for a complete briefing on the events in the DRC, and our government must do everything possible to support and protect our soldiers there, as this is a mission led by our president. At the appropriate time, the president will update the nation on what occurred in the DRC,” he added.
Various political parties, including the DA, EFF, MK Party, and ATM, have called for peace and the withdrawal of SANDF soldiers from the DRC to ensure the safety of South African soldiers. They also urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to address the nation regarding the conflict.
