Deputy President Paul Mashatile has pledged that farmworkers will not face exploitation under the government of national unity (GNU), regardless of the role played by the Democratic Alliance's federal leader, John Steenhuisen, as agriculture minister.
Speaking to organized labor at the annual National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) Organised Labour School on Tuesday, Mashatile addressed concerns raised by unions regarding the welfare of agricultural workers.
He reassured that the rights and gains of workers will remain intact under the GNU. Mashatile emphasized that decisions within the Cabinet are made collectively, irrespective of Steenhuisen's position.
“I understand that the agriculture minister is from the DA, and there may be actions that do not align with our progressive policies.
“Nonetheless, we will not permit that. Our Cabinet operates as a unified body appointed by the president,” Mashatile stated.
He further clarified that, despite the coalition nature of the GNU, ministers from various parties cannot independently formulate their own policies.
“We have established a statement of intent. While individuals can discuss their party policies, in government, we focus on the priorities set forth by the administration.”
Mashatile highlighted that the majority of the priorities outlined in the statement of intent are progressive in nature.
“There are indeed progressive policies, and we will steadfastly uphold them.”
He acknowledged the possibility that some members of the GNU might seek to modify the statement of intent.
