"Even if you were to resurrect Mandela, the ANC would still face defeat" , says MK.

Tensions within the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa are intensifying, as members of the Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MK) have issued a pointed critique regarding speculation about potential political appointments in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

This situation arises amidst reports that prominent ANC figures Jeff Radebe and Sbu Ndebele may be reassigned in an effort to bolster the party’s diminishing influence in the region.

However, supporters of MK have characterized these initiatives as ineffective, asserting that no individual, including the late former President Nelson Mandela, could restore the party’s declining status.

An MK veteran, who requested anonymity, remarked, “The ANC has severed its ties with the populace. Issues such as corruption, factionalism, and the inability to provide essential services have alienated voters. Even the return of Mandela would not suffice to rebuild trust.”

Once a bastion of ANC support, KZN has witnessed increasing voter dissatisfaction. The province was a critical arena during the 2024 elections, where the ANC experienced significant defeats against rival parties.

Rising concerns over unemployment, crime, and political instability have exacerbated discontent, even among the party’s own members.

Political analyst Lunga Mkhize posits that the remarks from MK signify deeper rifts within the ANC.

“These comments transcend mere criticism; they highlight a pervasive disillusionment with the party’s leadership and strategic direction. The redeployment of prominent figures like Radebe and Ndebele may not resolve the fundamental issues of governance and accountability,” Mkhize articulated.

In spite of the backlash, the ANC maintains a hopeful outlook regarding the revitalization of its influence in KZN. Party spokesperson Pule Mabe reiterated their dedication to engaging with communities to rebuild trust. “We are rectifying past errors and are committed to reconnecting with our constituents,” Mabe stated.
