A student who was stabbed by another student while heading to school is in hospital
A student from Alex, who was stabbed by another student while heading to school, is currently receiving treatment at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.
On January 15, as students returned to school across South Africa, one student in Alex faced a violent encounter on his way to class.
This Grade 10 student from Minerva Secondary was attacked by a student.
Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education, confirmed on January 17 that the incident occurred, and the victim was taken to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.
Mabona expressed concern that schools reflect societal issues, evident in student misbehavior, violence among students and teachers, bullying, crime, drug use, and teenage pregnancy.
"Our schools are part of the community, and what happens in our community is echoed in our schools," Mabona stated. "We encourage students to refrain from misbehavior and urge parents to help instill good conduct in their children both in and out of school."
He also mentioned that the department's psychosocial support team has been dispatched to the school to assist students and staff. The Department has formed partnerships aimed at promoting positive behavior in schools and raising awareness following such incidents.
"This approach is effective. We have collaborated with social development, public security, and private organizations to address many of the social issues present in our schools."
The South African Police Service (SAPS) was contacted for details regarding the stabbing incident, but it was revealed that neither the school nor the public had reported it to the police. Lieutenant Colonel Mpho Tshetlhane, the police communications coordinator for the Johannesburg region, confirmed that no case had been opened at the Alexandra police station.
