A sick learner was taken to the clinic in a wheelbarrow due to the lack of ambulances

A troubling event in N’wamitwa village, Greater Tzaneen, has elicited significant concern after a local resident observed a learner being transported to a nearby clinic in a wheelbarrow.

This alarming scenario transpired when a student from Makhanya Junior Secondary School became ill during class and had to resort to this unconventional means of transport due to the unavailability of ambulances.

The incident involved a learner, whose name has not been disclosed, who began to feel unwell while at school. According to the peer who was pushing the wheelbarrow, there were no ambulances available to provide assistance, leaving them with no alternative but to use the wheelbarrow to reach the nearest clinic.

“I am deeply troubled and disturbed by what I witnessed,” remarked the resident, who prefers to remain anonymous. “A learner was being transported in a wheelbarrow.”

Upon further inquiry, the student pushing the wheelbarrow explained that the individual inside had fallen ill during lessons, and the absence of ambulances forced them to resort to this method of transport.

What is particularly concerning is the lack of intervention from any educators at the school.

The resident expressed disappointment that, despite the urgent situation, teachers did not take action to provide assistance. “What is even more troubling is that not a single educator chose to intervene and help in this situation,” they noted.

The School Governing Body (SGB) of Makhanya Junior Secondary School was approached for a statement, but no response was received. Both the Department of Health and the Department of Education have been notified and have committed to investigating the incident.

As inquiries proceed, residents remain optimistic that the matter will be addressed, ensuring that no learner will have to endure such a critical situation in the future.
